## Generator Technical Information

Many people are intimidated by generators: Large, powerful engines, producing electricity!

When Neptune is asked to take care of your power requirements, you can be sure to benefit from our long experience in the generator hire industry, hence minimising the risk of the pitfalls.

**A brief explanation of the basic principles follows: **

A diesel generator consists of a diesel engine, coupled to an alternator. The engine provides the power, which the alternator converts to electricity. The engine is regulated to run at a constant speed, regardless of the load. Generators are rated in kVA (kilo Volt x Amps) as it is the product of Volts x Amps which limits the generating capacity of the alternator through the heating effect of the coils.

When matching an engine to an alternator, a power factor of 0.8 is assumed. It is important to remember that the actual load requirements may differ from this, resulting in an uneven match.

Whenever complex electrical calculations are involved, it is always wise to seek the assistance of a certified electrician. The above formulae are offered to assist in generating general estimations only. In most instances, there are numerous additional factors that should be accounted for (such as altitude, site conditions, iron losses, motor efficiencies, etc.).
